Materials sciences are one of the most engrossing, and fascinating sciences the world over: with our current technology, the ideas of yesterday are becoming the products of tomorrow. Fabrics and textiles are being remade and repurposed, entirely new products are being created from strands of the old. Leather, as it turns out, is no different: there’s a new form of leather on the scene, and it’s making quite a stir.
Bonded Leather
Bonded leather, as it’s called, is a reconstituted, synthetic leather made from leather products and synthetics. It feels, smells, and has all the properties of the real thing: it’s still amazingly weather resistant, tough, and will last for decades with proper care. More than that though, bonded leather has advantages normal leather doesn’t: as a reconstituted product, it’s environmentally friendly to a degree normal leather will never reach. In addition, bonded leather is cheaper, by a large degree, when compared to the ‘genuine’ product.
Bonded Leather Competitors
Opponents of bonded leather will talk of an almost ethereal quality: they know it’s ‘fake’, so they dislike it immediately, often times in the face of the massive advantages it has over the traditional product. People, by and large, fear change, whether it be in their handbag, or in the world around them. Even with a product as superior as bonded leather, they hold blindly to the relics of old, clutching them, fevered madmen whispering to lost relatives.
Those among us who are forward thinking, those pragmatists, will see bonded leather for what it is and jump at the chance to use it in our products. The advantages are numerous: it’s a product that is functionally the same as the ‘real’ competitor, but cheaper to a massive degree, more environmentally friendly, and more versatile. Since it’s man made, bonded leather can be adapted to a variety of situations and products by using other synthetic products.
Advent of technology, then, will always move forward, with or without you. The best solution, the logical choice, then, is to hop along and benefit from the labors of our society; instead, many scoff and spit in the face of progress. Progress, though, can’t be deterred or derailed: we will always push forward, make things better, faster, cheaper. Bonded leather is no exception, in fact, it’s an example of the technological prowess of modern man.
